Fishbourne Roman Palace celebrates it's opening, 40 years ago!
Forty years ago the opening of Fishbourne Roman Palace to the general public was an historic event. For the first time, visitors were able to come and see for themselves the remains of a substantial Roman Palace with its remarkable mosaics.
On Saturday May 31st the palace will be celebrating in style. A fleet of 1960's vintage cars will welcome you to Fishbourne Roman Palace where you can join in the fun to celebrate the anniversary and take a trip back to 1968 to see how the archaeologists worked to uncover the world famous mosaics.
There will be plenty of hands on activities such as using a potters wheel to make a Roman pot or trying to locate buried artefacts with a metal detector! Great fun for all the family and the kids will never know that they are learning at the same time as having fun! Fishbourne is all about making education and history fun and this special day is sure to keep everyone entertained and fascinated!
Throughout your visit you can test your knowledge on the quiz trail in search of 1960s memories, while the Collections Discovery Centre will provide you with the chance to view a gallery of images of the opening ceremony and participate in a prize draw for a family ticket to a private view of the conservator at work.
Steam train rides, live music and a picnic in the Roman Gardens will complete a day of fun and make this a memorable day for all. For even more fun - why not come in 60's fancy dress and party sixties style!
The celebrations run from 10am until 4pm. Tickets cost £7 for adults, £6 for seniors and students and child prices are just £3.70. You can purchase a family ticket (2+2) for £17.90. Tickets for disabled guests cost £5.50 while a carer can visit for free. For more details phone 01243 785859 or visit www.sussexpast.co.uk
